Verification and assurance of Scope 1 & 2 emissions

Roadchef is passionate about driving a sustainable future, minimising any impact on our planet and supporting local communities to do the same. As part of their commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, making a 90% reduction in our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030, Roadchef has partnered with a software provider for measuring, mitigating and managing their carbon footprint.

In 2023, Roadchef engaged Lantern for the first time to provide an independent audit of its Scope 1 and 2 carbon footprint for 2022, which serves as the baseline year in its Net zero Transition Plan. As an independent verifier, Lantern ensured that Roadchef’s methodologies, data collection processes, and emission factors aligned with ISO 14064-3 requirements and GHG Protocol guidelines. The verification covered:

-
Energy consumption (natural gas and electricity)
-
Fuel usage (diesel and petrol for Roadchef’s fleet)
-
LPG deliveries
-
Refrigerant use

In addition to the Limited Assurance Verification report, Lantern provided and Internal report with recommendations for Roadchef. These outputs helped Roadchef strengthen its data collection, reporting processes, and calculation methodologies. Any identified issues or inaccuracies were logged in detail, with clear guidance on resolutions.
Since the first verification, Lantern has continued to act as Roadchef’s independent verifier, providing assurance for its 2022, 2023, and 2024 carbon footprints. More recently, Lantern also carried out a Financial Materiality Assessment to help Roadchef identify and prioritise significant ESG topics affecting both operations and stakeholders. The findings will inform Roadchef’s forthcoming ESG Strategy, further embedding sustainability into its business model.
